Application process

When considering your application, academic achievement is a good place to start: you will need to be on track for a strong 2:1 in your undergraduate degree. Strong English and Chinese skills are also required and any additional Asian or foreign language skills are welcome, too.

Online application form

A good place to start is to address the online application form to our Graduate Recruitment Partners, James Comber and Eric Tan. The form is designed to help you showcase your talents; simply click on the link and add information about you and your education, plus a statement that tells us why you want to be a lawyer, and at Ashurst in particular. You can use the form for both internship programmes and training contracts.

Face-to-face interviews

Once you have made your application, we will ask you to complete a series of online tests to further understand your current skills, abilities and fit with Ashurst. If you’re shortlisted, you’ll be invited to interview and will be asked to complete a Chinese written test.

If you succeed in securing an internship with us and perform well during your internship, you will be invited to meet our Graduate Recruitment Partners and a panel of Counsel and Senior Associates for a final interview. Following this, we will let you know whether your application for a training contract has been successful.

If you are unable to attend our internship programme but your application for a training contract is shortlisted, you’ll be invited to participate in a similar interview process.

If we offer you a training contract and you are in two minds about accepting, do feel free to come back for another visit and meet more people. It’s important to be sure we’re the right choice for you.

After you have accepted

If you accept a training contract with us, you probably won’t be starting here for two years. To help you feel part of the firm straight away, we will be in regular contact and invite you to our networking events. We also care about your progress at law school: we are always available to provide any support and guidance, should you need it. When you do eventually sit down at your desk, we promise you will feel very much at home.

Hints and tips

Prepare before you begin

Get to know us (if you haven’t already) by reading through our website and talking to some people who work here. This ensures we are interviewing people who have researched us carefully and understand why we are different. Just as importantly, get to know yourself: make an honest assessment of what you do well and not so well.

Detail your strengths and weaknesses

We want to know you have the competencies we are looking for, so tell us about them in your own words. In your letter, be sure to describe your qualities and give examples of your achievements. Don’t just say you're a brilliant team leader. Instead, make sure you highlight the leadership roles you've held, and explain what each role involved and what you achieved in it.

Write clearly

Try not to make your application wordy and formal, or overly familiar. We will be most impressed if you explain yourself simply and clearly with the use of evidence. Lots of applicants tell us they want to join Ashurst because they would relish the chance to work on cutting-edge deals. Find a way to express this in your own words.

Use the application to shape your interview

Your interviewers use your application as a basis for the interview and are likely to ask you about the things you have highlighted. Use your work experience to full effect – it doesn’t matter whether your work experience is in a legal or non-legal role. Put it in and tell us what you've learned from it.
