Belgium – graduate programme
Located at the heart of the European institutions, the Brussels office Competition and EU law team provides specialised advice on competition law, trade and regulatory law and legal aspects of the internal market both at EU level and with national competition authorities to international clients across a range of business sectors.
Overview
Our graduate internship programme is aimed at graduates holding a Master's degree or LL.M. in European law who would like to gain first-hand experience with a leading Competition and EU law team. We seek to retain the best performing graduates at the end of the 6-month internship as trainee lawyers or junior associates in our Brussels office
Application process
In your application we want you to express yourself: tell us why you want to be a trainee or a lawyer – and why you’d like to join Ashurst in particular. To start you off, we’ve highlighted some hints and tips:
Prepare before you begin
Get to know us (if you haven’t already) by reading through our website and talking to people who work here. This is to make sure we’re interviewing people who have researched us carefully and understand why we’re different. Just as importantly, get to know yourself: make an honest assessment of what you do well and not so well.
Detail your strengths and weaknesses
We don’t ask specific questions on the competencies we’re looking for, but that isn’t because we don’t want to know that you have those competencies. We just prefer to give you the space to tell us about them in your own words. In your application, be sure to include those qualities and examples of your achievements.
Write clearly
We will be most impressed if you explain yourself simply and clearly with the use of evidence. Also, please avoid clichés. Lots of applicants tell us they want to be a lawyer because the law shapes society or they want to work at Ashurst because they would relish the chance to work on cutting-edge deals. Find a way to express this clearly and in your own words.
Use the application to shape your interview
Your interviewers use your application as a basis for the interview and are likely to ask you about the things you have highlighted. Use your work experience to full effect – it doesn’t matter whether your work experience is in a legal or non-legal role. Put it in and tell us what you learned from it.
Application timeline
We offer 6-months paid internships starting either on 1 March or 1 September of every year.
