Kai Yun's main areas of practice are restructuring and insolvency, commercial litigation and international arbitration, and shipping and maritime law. On the restructuring and insolvency front, Kai Yun regularly acts for corporate debtors, creditors, turnaround professionals, and investors.
Apart from her primary focus on restructuring and insolvency, Kai Yun also has expertise in shipping and maritime law. She has acted for bank creditors, ship owners, charterers, shipyards, offshore oil and gas companies in a variety of matters, including enforcement actions against vessels, the sale and purchase of vessels, sale-and-leaseback agreements, charter agreements and shipbuilding contracts, vessel arrests, marine insurance disputes and documentary credit disputes.
Kai Yun has been appointed to the International Women's Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation's (IWIRC) International Board as Asian Regional Conference Director and also currently serves on the IWIRC Singapore Board as Communications Co-Chair.
Kai Yun is consistently recognised across various legal directories as a Rising Star, including IFLR1000: Restructuring and Insolvency; Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific: Insolvency, asialaw: Restructuring and Insolvency, and International Women's Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC) and has been named by Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific as one of the Top 40 under 40 lawyers in Asia-Pacific. She has been described by clients as "very well versed in insolvency practice" providing "advice that is balanced with practical considerations". She has also been recognised for "providing valuable legal advice and recommendations" and "providing value-add on new legal judgments and how it impacts our line of work".
Kai Yun graduated from Singapore Management University (LL.B., Hons.) and is qualified in Singapore. Prior to joining Ashurst, Kai Yun spent a decade at a premier Southeast Asia-based law firm.
Kai Yun is fluent in English and Mandarin.
