Julia Carland is a senior associate in our competition practice
Julia advises on all areas of Australian competition and consumer protection law, with experience assisting clients on matters across the spectrum of competition and consumer protection work, including transactions, advisory work, investigations and disputes.
Recently, Julia has been particularly involved in supporting clients to navigate the new merger control regime in Australia, providing guidance on how to apply the new requirements and assisting clients with ACCC notifications and applications. She has also helped clients involved in ACCC investigations and provided advice on competition and consumer law risks arising from various commercial arrangements and transactions. Julia also advises on all aspects of the Australian Consumer Law, including misleading or deceptive conduct, consumer guarantees and unfair contract terms, and has experience advising on requirements under the Franchising Code of Conduct.
Julia is an accomplished legal and governance expert with significant experience across both government and private sectors. Having begun her career at Ashurst practising Competition law, Julia then held several senior roles in the NSW Government, including as General Counsel of a Public Service agency and as an Executive Director at The Cabinet Office, NSW. In these roles, Julia has been responsible for providing strategic legal and policy advice, leading legislative and administrative reforms, and managing complex regulatory matters. Julia also has a Master of Law from the University of Cambridge and completed an associateship with a Federal Court Judge.
