Cheyne specialises in native title and heritage, environmental law, and government approvals for major resources and energy projects.
He has extensive experience negotiating native title and cultural heritage agreements, providing strategic advice regarding environmental compliance and assessment, and obtaining project approvals. He assists clients with resolving issues in relation to tenure, land access, native title and heritage, as well as environmental compliance issues for both large- and small-scale projects.
Cheyne has particular experience with complex native title agreements, assisting clients through the planning, negotiation and implementation phases. He has acted for clients in some of the most significant native title deals in Australia. Cheyne has particular familiarity regarding trusts for traditional owners. He also advises clients in relation to Aboriginal heritage issues and assists with obtaining heritage approvals.
Cheyne has significant experience in relation to environmental law, and has advised in relation to State and Commonwealth environmental assessment processes, compliance issues such as contamination and clearing, and obtaining and managing environmental approvals.
