Hints and tips
Student and graduate application processes will vary according to the country where you are hoping to work. They will however always have an application and interview process so we have outlined some guidance on how best to prepare to ensure you get the best experience from our process.
How to complete your application
Prepare
Get to know us – study our website and talk to people who work here. This ensures you understand why we’re different and what we’re looking for.
Give details
Tell us in your own words what you can do. Describe your qualities and give examples of what you've already achieved. For example, don’t just say you’re a brilliant team leader. Instead, mention the leadership roles you’ve played, and explain what each role involved and what you achieved.
Write clearly
Be concise. Strike the right tone – informal yet polite is good. Explain yourself in simple and clear terms, with the use of evidence. Lots of applicants tell us they want to join Ashurst, because they’d relish the chance to work on cutting-edge deals. Find a way to express this in your own words.
Use your work experience
Use your work experience to its full effect. It doesn’t matter whether your experience is in a legal or non-legal role. Put it in and tell us what you’ve learned from it.

How to prepare for your interview
Be organised
It speaks for itself that you have to be on time and in the right place. So we’ll not waste words on that. More importantly, think about how you want to come across during your interview.
In our European offices you may be asked to prepare a presentation, so be ready, just in case you’re asked to do so. You can enquire in advance whether you can use slides or other media.
Questions
It’s likely you'll be asked about the things you’ve listed in your application. Work out what details you want to add during the interview to the information you gave in your application.
Other questions
There may be other questions. For example, what you know about our firm and why you want to work with us. In some of our locations we also use scenario-based questions, so it’s possible that you’ll be asked to explain how you’d act in a specific situation at work or with a client.
In the end
Decide before the interview what you want to get out of it. And what questions you want to ask at the end.
Finally
You can’t prepare for everything, and it’s important to remain true to who you are.
