Legal Analysts Q&A - Ashurst ADVANCE

Efficient resourcing using Legal Analysts

The traditional pyramid-based resourcing model used by law firms for delivering legal work is becoming increasingly outdated. Work comes in and you give it to the associates and trainees in your team sitting next to you who happen to be free. You know them, may have done similar work with them before and it's an easy arrangement to manage. It can also be very inefficient and suits the law firm more than the client.

The "NewLaw" model is to unbundle work into its component tasks and allocate each task to the resourcing layer most appropriately equipped to handle it, based upon their skills, experience and efficiency. That only works if you have a wider range of resources in your toolkit than just the traditional suite of partners, associates, trainees and paralegals in your prime city offices.

In this post, part of our continuing series looking at our Ashurst Advance platform, we would like to introduce you to our Legal Analyst team led by Iain Brown. We ask Iain about his team, their services and benefits.

Iain, what are Legal Analysts and what do they do?

"We have 70 Legal Analysts based across our Glasgow office and our new Brisbane global delivery centre. They are all law graduates employed by Ashurst and fulfil a role which, over time, spans elements of the traditional roles of paralegal, trainee solicitor and junior associate. They are a flexible, remote extension of the relevant Ashurst practice area and they work as part of a fully integrated team alongside the legal subject matter experts - the partners and associates - who "own" the matter and lead the client relationship. Legal Analysts carry out a variety of project based or recurring work to a high quality standard but at highly cost effective rates."

Can you give us some examples or use cases?

"We undertake large-scale repapering exercises for clients implementing regulatory change such as Brexit or LIBOR transition. The Legal Analysts perform document review work such as due diligence on M&A transactions, loan portfolio sales or lease reviews and co-ordinate multi-jurisdictional legal opinion sourcing and analysis. Discovery exercises in disputes, investigations and competition matters continue to be an area of high volume work with our human reviewers using technology assisted review tools such as continuous active learning (CAL) to increase efficiency. The team also provides full life cycle contract management services including outsourced commercial or financial contract negotiation."

What benefits are there for our clients?

"There are many benefits for clients. Work is carried out in a highly cost-effective manner, helping clients to better manage legal spend and fit work within tightly controlled budgets. The service is quickly scalable up or down, enabling us to respond to contingencies, or simply to resource different phases of a project efficiently. The Legal Analyst team is fully integrated with the legal subject matter expert team on a project enabling fully managed quality control, and works hand in hand with our Legal Project Management and Legal Technology teams, providing clients with a one-stop shop which is difficult to find with non-law firm service providers."

What does the future look like?

"Growth, agile resourcing and technology. I expect to see continuing and increased growth in the Legal Analyst team as clients increasingly seek outsourced managed services, and as transformation of the firm's delivery model accelerates across practice groups and offices globally. Agile resourcing is likely to increase alongside the permanent team, providing us with greater flexibility and options for clients. Finally, there will be an increasing integration of people and technology as a wider range of legal technology becomes available and embedded within the team's toolkit."
