In my first seat, I got to see first hand how international the work can be. I’ve been in charge of co-ordinating a project where we were gathering guidance on local regulations in 49 different jurisdictions for 49 different external counsels. I had personal responsibility for counsels from Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Thailand, Russia, Turkey and Switzerland, and contact with Ashurst offices in New York, Australia, China and many locations in between. Even working with so many different international offices, it feels like we’re all part of the same firm. There’s an unspoken shared understanding of how we’re going to work and behave with each other – and that makes a huge difference.

I’d say the way Ashurst approaches its client work is very different from other firms. For instance, if we’re answering a question for a client, we give a straight-to-the-point short answer – and offer more detail if they need it – because we know the client often has more than enough to read.

It's not just a case of getting the work done. You’re expected to be proactive and think on your feet to find your own solutions. It’s compelled me to think outside of the box – and I think in the process it’s also helped me learn more about myself and the way I work best.
