There is a great emphasis on early responsibility at the firm. Sometimes it’s nerve-racking to receive these tasks at such an early stage – but that kind of challenge is why you come to a place like Ashurst. It’s a huge part of your training, and colleagues are always happy to explain what’s going on. The support means you never feel like you’re thrown into the deep end. And it gives you the confidence to get more involved and play a real role in how projects are executed.

Every day is different at Ashurst. There’s no telling on a day-to-day basis what sort of task you’ll be given, so you are constantly learning and developing. The projects you get to work on are complex and have you operating at the forefront of the market, which brings a sense of satisfaction and achievement to everything you do.

Before I joined, I kept hearing how every law firm has its own unique culture. In Ashurst’s case, their culture is all about passion for knowledge, having fun, being open and helping one another. Right from the word go you feel like you’re part of the firm. I was expecting to find a competitive environment but there’s a great team atmosphere. It’s reassuring to know there are colleagues all over the firm – lawyers and non-lawyers alike – who are willing to help you better yourself.

Having a diverse range of people opens up a world of ideas and insights for our business and our clients. We actively foster this diversity in a number of ways.

Firstly, we communicate openly through regular newsletters, reports, and articles – reporting on where we are not succeeding as well as where we are. Secondly, we work hard to actively include everyone, through a considered use of employee support groups. These groups put on a huge variety of events to educate, inform and entertain, and, crucially, they  act as a forum for ideas, issues and priorities that are conveyed to all the partners. Thirdly, through clear action plans, we make sure our focus is not just on recruiting employees from different backgrounds, faiths and cultures, but on supporting them fairly, understanding their perspectives and making them feel genuinely welcome.
