Would an LLM help my application?
No. You should study an LLM for your own interests rather than think it will give you an advantage over other candidates.

I don't have (or am not on track to receive) a 2:1 or First at university. Can I still apply?
You can, but we would be unlikely to invite you to interview. We are looking for the strongest candidates who apply and we receive a very high number of applications each year from candidates who do meet the criteria. Think carefully about whether it is worth applying before spending time completing an application.

We look for candidates who have achieved a minimum of AAB at A levels (highest three A levels, not including general studies) and a 2.1 or First at degree level (or equivalent). If you have extenuating circumstances that have affected your grades then please let us know by completing the relevant section in our online application form. We will ask for evidence later in the process

When should I apply for a vacation scheme?
You can apply if you are a penultimate year law student or beyond, or a finalist or graduate studying a non-law degree.

What's the deadline for a vacation scheme or training contract?
Please see the career journey page for information about the deadlines for each scheme or for our training contracts.

When should I apply for a training contract?

We will be accepting applications to start in September 2020/March 2021 from 1 October 2017. There will be two windows to apply for training contracts with the firm. These will be from 1 October 2017 to 7 January 2018 and then again from 1 May 2018 to 31 July 2018.

The two windows are to ensure you have an opportunity to apply at a time that best suits you.  The early window is for those candidates who feel ready to apply for a training contract straight away.  If you have applied for and are planning to undertake a summer vacation scheme later in the year, you should wait until the summer to apply.

You can apply at either time if you are a penultimate year law student or beyond, or a finalist or graduate studying a non-law degree.

Can I apply for a training contract or vacation scheme with my CV rather than complete the application form?
No. In order to ensure we get all the information we need, we ask that you complete the online application form. Applications are open between September and July (depending on vacancy) each year.  We do not accept applications by email or post.

Campus visits and sponsorship

I am seeking sponsorship for a university club/society. Who do I contact?
Please email any proposals to Sarah Donoghue.

You don't visit my university. Does that mean you're not interested in an application from me?

Not at all. Current trainees studied at 44 different universities and we value the diversity of thought that this brings. We're interested in receiving applications from candidates who are likely to excel here, regardless of their university choice.

Career changers

Do you accept applications for the vacation scheme and training contracts from candidates who already have a career and are looking to switch to law?
We encourage applications from anyone who has the appropriate experience and qualifications for both the vacation scheme and for training contracts, which includes mature graduates and those who are changing career.

I work full time and am not able to undertake a vacation scheme; how can I find out more about the firm?
We host evening events in our London office.  See the events section for upcoming events.

Law school

Where should I study the LPC?
All our future trainees are required to study the LPC at The University of Law Moorgate, where we have designed a tailored Ashurst LPC programme. Those on the programme will work with Ashurst case studies and precedents, and the firm's lawyers are involved in teaching sessions, with the aim of ensuring that trainees are equipped with the relevant skills when they start their training contract.

Where should I study the GDL?
We ask all our future trainees to apply to The University of Law (any branch). However, if you are already studying the GDL elsewhere, then you should still apply.

Overseas lawyers

Do you fund the QLTS (Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme)?
We do not fund the QLTS as we do not recommend studying this concurrently while working. We prefer those newly qualified from another jurisdiction to study GDL and LPC and undertake a training contract rather than take the QLTS.

Should I apply for a training contract or qualified role?
If you have less than two years of vocational experience, then you should apply for a training contract.  If you have two years or more of vocational experience as a lawyer, please apply for an appropriate experienced hire vacancy.

Do I need the right to work in the UK to apply for a vacation scheme or training contract?

No, and the firm will apply for a work permit on your behalf, if you are offered a role.

Reasonable adjustments for disabled candidates

I have a disability. Will I be required to disclose this on my application?
No.  But if you are invited to interview, we strongly advise you to disclose your disability and let us know whether we need to make any adjustments to our interview process in order to ensure you perform at your best.  If you require adjustments, you will have a dedicated contact in the team who will be there to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Work experience and vacation schemes

Can I arrange ad hoc work experience?
Unfortunately we are not able to take on students for informal work experience. Eligible candidates are encouraged instead to apply for a place on our placement schemes.

If I don't do a vacation scheme, will it still be possible for me to apply for a training contract?
Vacation schemes are just one route to a training contract.  You do not need to undertake one at the firm in order to obtain a training contract.

If I have applied for a vacation scheme but been unsuccessful, can I still apply for a training contract?
Yes, you are welcome to apply for a training contract. However, you should ensure that you review your application thoroughly before reapplying. You should include any skills and experience you may have gained since your previous application.
