Academic qualifications

I don't have a consistently strong academic record. Can I still apply?
You can, but think carefully about whether it’s worth it before spending time makingan application. We look for the strongest candidates and we receive many applications each year from people who are academically strong. If there are mitigating circumstances surrounding your grades, please let us know in the relevant section of our application form. We’ll ask for supporting documentation later.

Applications

Do you accept applications from non-penultimate year students for seasonal clerkships?
We prefer clerkship candidates to be in the penultimate year of their combined Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctorate or Graduate Law degrees. But we will consider applications from finalists, if they were not able to complete a clerkship in their penultimate year.

Campus visits and sponsorship

I am seeking sponsorship for a university club/society. Who do I contact?
Please email any proposals directly to the graduate team.

You don't visit my university. Does that mean you're not interested in an application from me?
No, not at all. Current employees in Australia studied at 80 universities and we value the diversity of thought this brings. We want applications from people who are likely to excel here, regardless of where they’ve studied.

Eligibility

Can I apply for a seasonal clerkship if I’m an international law student?
We recruit seasonal clerks on the understanding that they may go on to join our graduate programme when they complete their law degrees. To join our clerkship programme, you must have the legal right to work unrestricted in Australia. Graduates must be able to independently gain these working rights when they complete their law degrees.

Can I apply for your graduate programme if I was previously unsuccessful for a seasonal clerkship?
Yes – although we do ask that you complete a new application form. Before starting, be honest about whether your academic record and application will be different enough this time, and describe any skills and experience you’ve gained since you last applied.

When should I apply?
Our clerkship recruitment periods vary between offices, so you'll need to investigate the relevant key dates for clerkship recruitment on the career journey page. We can’t accept applications that are late or not submitted via our application form.

Reasonable adjustment for disabled candidates

I have a disability. Do I need to tell you this on my application?
No. But if we invite you to an interview, we strongly advise you to tell us about your disability and let us know whether we need to adjust our interview process so you can perform at your best. If you’d like us to make adjustments, we’ll give you a dedicated contact in our team who’ll make sure everything goes smoothly.

Work experience and paralegals

Do you recruit casual paralegals?
Our paralegal rosters co-ordinate with university semester timetables. We maintain relationships with, and emphasise our commitment to, our former seasonal clerks by giving them priority for paralegal work in their final year of study. Our clerkship programme meets most of our paralegal needs. However, we do occasionally recruit paralegals outside this and advertise any vacancies on our website.

Can I arrange ad hoc work experience?
Unfortunately we’re not able to take on students for informal work experience. We’d encourage you to apply for a place on our seasonal clerkship programme instead.
