Thinking differently - Karina Clarke
Karina is a Senior Manager at Ashurst Advance, our legal technology arm. In this interview, Karina discusses her role at the firm, heading down a non-traditional legal career path, and what it means to share a sense of togetherness at work.
You have had an interesting career at Ashurst and in particular Ashurst Advance, can you tell us about your career journey?
My career journey has been about embracing change and thinking differently. I joined the firm as a Legal Analyst in 2014 after realising I wanted something different from the traditional legal route. Eight years later, I find myself a Senior Manager – hiring, training and developing the next generation of NewLaw talent in the Advanced Delivery Services team.
I have watched our team grow and expand across the globe, becoming a division in our own right along the way. This growth also allowed me to escape Glasgow for a stint in sunnier climes when I trained our first cohort of Legal Analysts in Brisbane. I am grateful to work in an environment which has supported my own career growth and now let's me develop others in a similar way. The passion and enthusiasm within Ashurst Advance is infectious and means no one day is the same (sounds cheesy I know, but it's true!).
What makes you feel proud to work at Ashurst?
I feel fortunate to be part of a large, global community where I am surrounded by a diverse group of experts and innovators in their field. Our people are incredible, collaborative and passionate. There is so much opportunity to learn and grow, which is what makes working here so special! The progressive nature and social culture (nothing beats a night out in Glasgow) of our firm is second to none and very refreshing.
What does 'Together, we create the extraordinary' mean to you?
I believe our purpose clearly illustrates the creativity, energy and collaborative feel of each and every team within the firm. We want to showcase our talent and be the best we possibly can be.
How can you bring our purpose to life?
People are at the centre of our business and should be the priority. As a leader and manager, I aim to create an open, inclusive environment where our people can thrive and be their authentic selves. We need to support, empower and celebrate each and every individual.
Why do you think organisations like Ashurst need a purpose?
After a challenging time, where many have felt disconnected and isolated, having a purpose has become more important than ever. In a large global firm like ours, we want to create a sense of inclusion and community where each contribution connects to our shared goals and values. That sense of togetherness allows each team and individual to bring out the best in one another.
