Finding innovative solutions beyond precedent - Anna Hermelin
Anna Hermelin is managing partner of our Los Angeles office and co-head of the firm's projects, Americas practice. We spoke to Anna about what creating the extraordinary means to her, how working across Global Ashurst has enriched her career, and what she describes as a leader's 'best feeling'.
What does teamwork mean to you?
For our clients, it means that we are more than just arm's length advisors. We act as an extension of their teams, becoming personally invested in helping them to achieve their objectives and in finding innovative solutions that aren't constrained by precedent. As a team, it means that it is by working together and making the most of our diversity of thought, that we can produce the extraordinary.
During your Ashurst career you have relocated a number of times, most recently from Japan to California – what has been the biggest benefit to work in a number of offices across Global Ashurst?
It has been a privilege to work in a number of locations on behalf of Ashurst. I think one of the biggest benefits has been to have the opportunity to listen and hear so many different perspectives. It's made me a better lawyer and team member in that it has encouraged me to always look at challenges and opportunities from a number of different angles. Another benefit is having had the opportunity to meet and work with so many talented colleagues and clients that I can't wait to visit as soon as travel restrictions allow!
What makes you proud to work at Ashurst?
Tara (Tara Waters, Partner in London) said it very well recently when she highlighted the people across the firm who understand the need for change and adaptation. I'm proud that as a firm we value constant evolution and are not afraid to let people try something new, and then to learn and iterate and adapt to continue to improve. I'm also incredibly proud every day working with the team in Los Angeles – it is not easy being the first into a new and growing office and they take on every challenge and opportunity with enthusiasm and passion – and every day working with the broader US projects team. Hearing a client's glowing praise for a team member is the best feeling.
