Have you got what it takes

The culture and the people

Ashurst lawyers are radical thinkers who are not afraid to push the boundaries of established practice. Bright people who understand how to turn obstacles into advantages. And we are quite informal for a firm of lawyers. That's because we keep bureaucracy to a minimum and work in a lively, open environment where everyone enjoys what they do. We believe that this sets us apart.

Above all, we are dedicated team players, focused on providing our clients with an extraordinary level of service. We do more than that, though. We develop real friendships with our clients and get to know them as people. We also make sure they know how highly we value them. This "client care" is a key aspect of the Ashurst approach. Everyone here embraces it.

As a trainee, you will play an important role in our core client teams. We will encourage you to develop your own professional contacts, laying the seeds for building client relationships in the future. We will expect you to participate in business development initiatives and, like everyone else in the firm, to make your views known. We will listen to, and respect, those views.

You will also have the opportunity to develop your communication, legal research, legal drafting, client interaction, oral presentation and time management skills.

Qualities of a trainee

To become an Ashurst trainee, you will need to show common sense and good judgement. We need to know that you can handle responsibility, because you will be involved in some of the highest quality international work on offer anywhere. We ask for a minimum of a 2.1 degree either in law or a non-law subject. You will also need to have passed the Graduate Diploma in Law (if required) and the Legal Practice Course prior to commencing your training contract'.

As we have offices in 12 countries worldwide and high-profile multinational clients, you will need to demonstrate that you can bring an international perspective to your work. The transactions and cases you will be involved in will be intellectually demanding, so we are looking for high academic achievers who are able to think laterally.

But it's not just academic results that matter. We want people who have a range of experiences and interests outside of their studies. And we want outgoing people with a sense of humour who know how to laugh at themselves.

We are looking for people with the communication skills required to advise clients and colleagues on technical, legal and commercial issues in plain and understandable terms. Foreign language skills are also desirable.

The list of qualities we are looking for is long. But if you possess them, you could be rewarded with an extraordinary career with us.
